According to one source, there are more than 200 wineries in the appellation. Only 200mm (of an annual average 1160mm) rain falls between October and April and this, together with Margaret River’s latitude (33.955S), make for a Mediterranean climate. Overall the climate is similar to that of Bordeaux in a dry vintage. Surprisingly, although it grows only 3% of Australia’s grapes, Margaret River produces 20% of the country’s premium wine. Any wonder then that this region is so highly valued.
There’s an almost even split between red and white grapes, with principal varieties being Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot on the one hand and Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chenin Blanc and Verdelho on the other.
